WoodsmokeThe Halloween when I was seven years old, my grandmother was found dead on the old Crawford property. I don't know why she went there, but her Chihuahua dog went missing on the same day so I think she was searching for him. Her body was in the house, in the fireplace. There was nothing wrong with her body. It was as if her soul simply fled.
I told my parents I wouldn't trick-or-treat, because it seemed disrespectful on the day my grandmother died. I couldn't stop thinking about her. The Halloween I was ten I went outside to play, but instead of staying in our yard I walked the .9 kilometres to the Crawford property.

Whose WitchWhose Witch

It was the general way of things, that a witch was created every time a child was born. Just as in previous generations one spoke of the angel and devil on one's shoulder, in this lifetime it was an angel and a witch. It was generally known that witches were responsible for the bad things you experienced, and, as the good things seemed hard to come by, it was assumed that the angels were dying. So the witches had the job of being both the good and the evil, though some were more inclined to one of the two.
When a person died, or a child was stillborn, a witch was left soulless. That witch would hover above the grave of
